Below is a list of Cultural Competence Topics
Every module can be customized to meet the unique needs of your organization
According to the National Center of Cultural Competence (NCCC) achieving cultural and linguistic competence is a developmental process where both individuals and organizations are at various levels of awareness, knowledge, and skills along the cultural competence continuum. While there is no one definition of cultural competence, definitions have evolved from diverse perspectives, interests and needs and are incorporated in state legislation, federal statutes and programs, private sector organizations and academic settings.
The US Department of Health and Human Services defines it as “Having the capacity to function effectively as an individual and an organization within the context of the cultural beliefs, behaviors and needs presented by consumers and their communities.“
The United States presents a very diverse demography where people of different races, origins, languages and perspectives coexist. Building a sensitive, empathetic and respectful system means to give employees the skills that are needed to stay aware of social differences, overcome bias, and be responsive to everyone’s needs.
These skills vary from communicating effectively in a diverse setting all the way to adapting to and accommodating other people’s views, behaviors and expectations.
Some of the biggest benefits of nurturing these skills include:
- Maximizing customer satisfaction
- Improving patient outcomes
- Creating a welcoming work environment for employees
- Enhancing communication
- Welcoming a variety of perspectives, ideas, and strategies
- Turning patients into active partners in the decision-making process
